Microgaming Will Release New Highlander Slots

Microgaming signed a licensing deal to create a branded slot game based on the 80s cult movie, Highlander. The Highlander slots from Microgaming  is scheduled to go live on Dec. 6 this year and will eventually make its way to Bitcoin casinos that carry Microgaming and Quickfire games. This includes Das Ist Casino, and TonyBet.

The Highlander franchise was a major hit during the 90s. This is due to the concept of immortality, its influential medieval sword fight, and the setting of the past.

David Reynolds, the games publisher of Microgaming, said:

“Highlander is seen as one of the great cult hits of the 80s. With its action-packed storyline and hefty rock inspired composition, it is a fantastic brand for an online slot. The game studio is busy completing the slot that captures the entire movie magic. The game’s features will incorporate the historical Scottish Highlands and gritty New York City, with a classic movie poster art style and blistering guitar tracks.”

The Isle of Man software provider is set on making a branded slot based on the original 1986 Highlander film. Highlander featured Christopher Lambert as Connor Macleod and Sean Connery as Lobos Ramirez who is Connor’s mentor.

According to Reynolds, the slot will have five reels and 243 ways to win. One of the features of the game is a Déjà vu Shuffle feature where players will get two stacked Wilds on both the first and fifth reels while getting a free re-spin on the second, third, and fourth reel.

If Microgaming’s previous branded games are to be the basis for the upcoming Highlander slots, players can expect many movie clip and audio references from the movies.

Stephanie Kupperman from Creative Licensing said:

“Many of the iconic characters from classic “Highlander” are featured in the slot, including Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, Roxanne Hart as Brenda Wyatt and Clancy Brown as The Kurgan. We think fans are really going to enjoy revisiting this epic story, and seeing their favourite heroes and villains in game format.”

Success of the Highlander franchise

The Highlander film is about the battle between immortal fighters who have lived throughout history and continues to live in the present day of the movie. The movie’s protagonist is Connor Macleod who hails from the Scottish Highlands. Highlander goes through his life as an immortal up to his battle against Kurgan who is the last immortal fighter in the world.

Despite not finding financial success upon its US release, the Highlander film became popular in Europe and other regions. The franchise became a cult classic which led to the creation of several movie sequels and a Canadian-French series that lasted for six seasons. The opening to song the series was ‘Princes of the Universe’ which was sang by the legendary rock band Queen.
