Pokémon Unite made waves when it was first revealed in June 2020 as a promising Pokémon-themed game under The Pokémon Company and Tencent’s TiMi Studios. And now, it is making a stronger buzz as the game producers shared the potential that they see for their newest game to enter esports.

While many see Pokémon Unite as the newest multiplayer online battle arena, Pokémon Unite game producer Masaaki Hoshino prefers to call it a 5v5 team strategy battle game. He stressed how they designed the game to be playable by everyone regardless of age and gender, including those who are new and are not good in playing MOBA games.

With these in mind, they developed Pokémon Unite to work across platforms (Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch) and equipped it with an exciting gameplay that will appeal to a wider demographics, and not just MOBA players.

The Future of Pokémon Unite in International Esports Arena

The Pokémon Company admittedly wanted Pokémon Unite to be the game that everyone will enjoy above anything else. They want to give Pokémon fans a new game to play, as well as introduce MOBA players and future fans to Pokémon. They want players to unite.

Having pro esports teams play Pokémon Unite in an arena, however, is far down on the company’s priority list. But taking the route to esports is possible if the player base wants to take it there. After all, Pokémon Unite would not be the first Pokémon-themed game to join esports as the Pokkén Tournament World Championships already exists. Tencent is not new to esports as its prized creation League of Legends is a star in esports.

The Pokémon Company Chief Business Officer Kenjiro Ito said in Japanese:

“I think that if everyone gathers in the game and the situation in which the audience in the game is watching can be created, it will be fully established as esports.”

But for now, they are first focusing on bringing Pokémon Unite to mobile devices and Nintendo Switch. No release date has been announced, but many players already express their excitement over the free-to-play game.
