SG Digital Gears Up to Enter US Sports Betting Market

Scientific Games Corporation will become a major sports betting solutions provider in the US market through SG Digital.

Formed through the combination of SG Interactive and NYX, SG Digital will build its brand in the US through the OpenBet platform once the US Supreme Court repeals the Professional and Amateur Sports Protections Act 1992 (PASPA) that will legalize sports betting in New Jersey. Right now, SCOTUS has yet to issue its opinion on the New Jersey case after the recent hearing on Dec. 4, 2017. Should the act be repealed, SG Digital through OpenBet will debut in the New Jersey market.

Keith O’Loughlin, SVP of sportsbook and platforms in SG Digital, adds:

“Legalised sports betting in the U.S. is an exciting prospect for us, and we’re taking every step possible to ensure our product offering is fully compliant to hit the ground running when the marketplace eventually opens up beyond the current regulated states. OpenBet has built a strong reputation as a trusted sportsbook provider in Europe, and we’re confident we can replicate that success in the U.S. and all other emerging regulatory territories. We have spent time considering U.S. customer needs and are focused on ensuring that the user experience is of high standard and can be delivered with speed.”

Preparation to Enter the US Sportsbook Market

SG Digital to Reach US Players Through OpenBetOpenBet will go through New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) sports betting product review. DGE will make sure that OpenBet provides responsible gaming experiences and offer a safe sports betting solution.

Matt Davey, group chief executive of SG Digital, said:

“SG Digital has a strong presence in New Jersey with our Open Platform System (OPS) already certified in the state; our knowledge of the market will play an important part in preparing OpenBet for the marketplace. We work closely with the DGE to ensure responsible gaming experiences and congratulate the effort of the DGE and the state of New Jersey for taking progressive action to help create a safer sports betting market for the public. We are setting the foundations well in advance to help our partners establish themselves early in the emerging territory.”

The gaming company is currently holding a recruitment drive along with meeting the expectations of its consumers and operators in the market and detailing specific product for punters. These moves can help in SG Digital’s growth.

Status of the New Jersey Sports Betting Case

PASPA is a law that prohibits sports betting in the US except in Nevada, Oregon, Montana, and Delaware. New Jersey argued that PASPA violated the constitution by not allowing states from creating its sports betting law.

The most recent development of the New Jersey case was the hearing last December 2017 when SCOTUS listened to arguments on PASPA. SCOTUS was expected to provide its opinion regarding the case as early as March 5 or April 2. But both dates have already passed. Some believe that the justices are taking their time to carefully consider the outcome of their decision on the case.

Deciding that PASPA is unconstitutional can radically change the US’ stance on legalized sports betting law. Other states will also pass bills to allow sportsbooks in its jurisdiction.

SCOTUS is expected to provide an opinion or deliver a decision to the New Jersey case on April 30. A decision is reached only when Justices are in session.
