Will Ethereum Dip to $1,250 by December 31, 2026? Inside the Polymarket Money
A Polymarket contract prices Ethereum dipping to $1,250 by 31 Dec 2026 near 8%. Inside the ETF outflows moving the money and what the odds really mean.
A single Polymarket contract asking whether Ethereum will fall to $1,250 by 31 December 2026 has drawn unusual attention this week, even though the market still prices the outcome as a long shot. The “YES” side trades near 8% as of 20 October 2026 on the Polymarket event covering what price Ethereum will hit before 2027. The activity has picked up alongside a run of US spot Ether ETF redemptions, a slide in the ETH price toward the $2,380 area, and a risk-off mood tied to Middle East conflict and higher oil. None of that makes a near-halving of Ethereum the base case, but it explains why a deep-downside bet is suddenly busy.
How does the “$1,250 Ethereum” market work, and how does it resolve?
It is a binary contract on Polymarket. The “YES” side pays if Ethereum reaches $1,250 or lower at any point before 1 January 2027, and “NO” pays if it does not, under the market’s resolution rules. Each share settles at $1 or $0. The wider event, opened on 24 November 2025, tracks a ladder of ETH price targets and has recorded about $18.25m in total volume.
The $1,250 line sits well below where Ethereum trades today, so the market is effectively pricing the chance of a sharp sell-off before the year ends. Because it is a touch market, a single intraday wick to $1,250 would resolve it “YES” even if ETH recovered the same day.
What are the odds right now, and what do they imply?
As of 20 October 2026, the $1,250 “YES” share trades near 8 cents on the dollar, an implied probability of about 8%, with roughly $736,000 of volume on that single contract. A market price is a probability, not a price target. It says that traders, on balance, see only a modest chance that ETH touches $1,250 before 31 December 2026, while leaving plenty of room for the view to shift.
For context, nearby contracts in the same event price shallower dips as far more likely, which is what you would expect from a price ladder. We state the headline figure once, with its timestamp, and link the market above rather than quoting prices from anywhere else.
What does an 8% market price mean in betting odds?
An 8% implied probability converts to decimal odds of 12.5, fractional odds of about 23/2 (11.5 to 1) and American odds of +1150. Those are three ways of writing the same break-even price: stake one unit to win 11.5 if the bet lands. A sportsbook or casino would shorten that price to build in its margin, so its quote on the same outcome is usually worse for the bettor than the raw market probability.
Here is the maths from an 8% probability (0.08):
- Decimal: 1 ÷ 0.08 = 12.5. A winning $1 “YES” share returns $12.50 including your stake.
- Fractional: (1 − 0.08) ÷ 0.08 = 11.5, written 11.5/1 or 23/2.
- American: (1 ÷ 0.08 − 1) × 100 = +1150, the profit on a 100-unit stake.
On a prediction market the “YES” and “NO” prices sum close to 100%, so the implied probability is relatively clean. A bookmaker’s book usually sums to more than 100%, the overround, and that gap is where its edge sits. We do not quote any sportsbook’s price here, and this is not a recommendation to bet with one. Unlike a provably fair casino game, where you can check each result, a prediction-market price only reflects what other traders are willing to pay.
Responsible gambling note: that built-in margin, like a house edge, means bettors lose money on average over the long run. Treat any stake as money you can afford to lose and set your own limits.
Why is this market moving now?
Two forces are behind it. US spot Ether ETFs have bled money for weeks, and the ETH price has fallen toward the $2,380 area while Bitcoin held up better. A broader risk-off move, tied to Middle East attacks and oil above $111 a barrel, has added pressure. Together they make a deep-downside contract more active, even though none of it points to a halving of Ethereum by December.
According to crypto.news, US spot Ether ETFs saw roughly $320.1m of net outflows in the week of 12 to 16 October 2026, against about $228.4m for Bitcoin funds. TokenPost reported a further $103m daily outflow on 19 October, a fourth straight negative session. Fortune put ETH at $2,379.30 on the morning of 20 October, down about 40% from a year earlier, while Bitcoin traded near $81,000. Yahoo Finance tied the slide to attacks in Saudi Arabia and against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, plus crude oil above $111 a barrel and uncertain Federal Reserve rate expectations.
| Date (2026) | Catalyst | Reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 29 | US spot Ether ETF outflow streak begins | Start of a multi-week run |
| Oct 5 to 9 | Weekly Ether ETF net outflows | About $542m |
| Oct 6 | Glamsterdam upgrade activates on Sepolia testnet | 200m gas target |
| Oct 12 to 16 | Weekly Ether ETF net outflows | About $320.1m (Bitcoin about $228.4m) |
| Oct 19 | Daily Ether ETF outflow, fourth straight session | $103m |
| Oct 20 | ETH spot price | About $2,380 |
| Oct 26 | Glamsterdam scheduled on Hoodi testnet | Epoch 132,352, 200m gas |
Who is driving the ETF selling?
BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) has led the redemptions. In the week of 12 to 16 October 2026 it accounted for about $299m of the roughly $320.1m pulled from US spot Ether ETFs, close to 93% of the category’s net outflow. On 19 October it saw $95.4m of the day’s $103m exit, the largest of any fund. That concentration in one issuer matters, because a single desk’s rebalancing can dominate the weekly figure.
This is still trimming rather than an exodus. TokenPost put ETHA’s cumulative net inflows since launch near $12.4bn, with all US spot Ether ETFs holding about $12.84bn of cumulative net inflows and roughly $14.77bn of net assets. Steady outflows weigh on sentiment and feed the bearish narrative, but the funds remain large.
Does the Glamsterdam upgrade change the picture?
Not yet, at least not directly. Glamsterdam, Ethereum’s next network upgrade, activated on the Sepolia testnet on 6 October 2026 and is scheduled for the Hoodi testnet on 26 October at epoch 132,352, with a 200 million gas target. It bundles EIP-7732, which brings enshrined proposer-builder separation into the consensus protocol, and EIP-7928, which adds block-level access lists. The Ethereum Foundation has set no mainnet date.
For a crypto-savvy reader, that open-ended timeline cuts both ways. Testnet progress supports the long-term scaling thesis, while uncertainty over when, or whether, the changes reach mainnet can encourage short-term “sell the event” positioning. A clean Hoodi run that leads to a mainnet date would be the more meaningful signal. How far would Ethereum have to fall to reach $1,250?
A long way. With ETH near $2,380 on 20 October 2026, a move to $1,250 is a fall of roughly 47%, close to halving from current levels. Ethereum is already down about 40% from a year earlier and has lagged Bitcoin, which traded near $81,000 on the same day. A decline of that size inside about ten weeks would usually need a fresh shock, not just the steady ETF outflows seen so far.
The kind of catalyst that could do it includes a market-wide crypto deleveraging event, far larger and faster redemptions, a failed or badly delayed upgrade, or a sharp macro risk-off turn. Nothing in the verified record between 6 and 20 October 2026 documents such an event. That is consistent with the market’s own pricing: heightened downside risk, but not a base-case collapse to $1,250.
Can you trade Polymarket where you live?
Not everywhere. Polymarket is an on-chain prediction market that restricts more than 40 jurisdictions. Sanctioned territories such as Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Syria are blocked outright. France, Germany, the UK, Australia, Brazil and Singapore are listed as “close-only,” letting existing users exit positions but not open new ones. Japan, Ireland, the Netherlands and Malta face front-end limits.
US access is a separate story. The platform paid a $1.4m CFTC penalty in 2022 and geo-blocked US users for years. Reporting indicates it later routed US customers through a separate CFTC-regulated designated contract market with full identity checks, with a US app opening to iOS users during 2026. If you are in the US, UK, Japan, Brazil or any other restricted market, treat this as a statement of fact, not encouragement: check your local law, and note that Polymarket’s terms prohibit using VPNs to evade geoblocks. What should a crypto-savvy reader watch next?
Three signals. Watch the US spot Ether ETF flow trend, the ETH price relative to Bitcoin, and the Glamsterdam testnet result on 26 October 2026. A clear reversal back to ETF inflows would undercut the bearish case. A successful Hoodi run that sets a mainnet date could lift sentiment. A deeper macro or Middle East shock would do the opposite and is the main path toward the $1,250 line.
Prediction-market prices move with those signals, so today’s 8% is a snapshot rather than a fixed figure. If you follow this market, pair it with the underlying flow and price data instead of the headline odds alone, and keep your own responsible gambling limits in view.
FAQ
What does the Polymarket “$1,250 Ethereum” market resolve on?
It is a binary contract that pays the “YES” side if Ethereum reaches $1,250 or lower at any point before 1 January 2027, and pays “NO” if it does not, under Polymarket’s resolution rules. Each share settles at $1 or $0. It sits inside a wider event tracking several ETH price targets before 2027.
What are the odds of Ethereum hitting $1,250 by 31 December 2026?
As of 20 October 2026, the “YES” share trades near 8 cents on the dollar on Polymarket, an implied probability of about 8%, with roughly $736,000 of volume. That is the market’s view at a point in time and changes as traders react to price, ETF flows and news.
Why are Ethereum ETF outflows pushing this market?
US spot Ether ETFs posted net outflows for weeks, including about $320.1m in the week of 12 to 16 October 2026 and $103m on 19 October, with BlackRock’s ETHA leading. Steady selling, a falling ETH price and a risk-off macro backdrop make a deep-downside contract more active, even without a base case for a crash.
Is an 8% market price the same as a bookmaker’s odds?
Roughly, but not exactly. An 8% probability equals decimal odds of 12.5, fractional odds of about 11.5 to 1, and American odds of +1150. A bookmaker shortens the price to add a margin, the overround, so its quote on the same outcome is usually worse for the bettor than the raw market probability.
Can I trade Polymarket where I live?
It depends on your country. Polymarket restricts more than 40 jurisdictions, blocks sanctioned states outright, and puts markets such as France, Germany, the UK, Australia, Brazil and Singapore in close-only mode. US access runs through a separate CFTC-regulated venue with identity checks. Check your local law before using it.
