XRP and Ripple: what the names mean

XRP is the coin. The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is the open-source blockchain it runs on, live since 2012. Ripple is a US company that helped build the ledger, holds a large amount of XRP and sells payment services to financial institutions. Casinos use “Ripple” and “XRP” interchangeably, and both mean the coin on the XRP Ledger.

A fixed supply of 100 billion XRP was created when the ledger launched, and no more can be issued. The XRPL does not use mining or staking. Instead, independent validators agree on each new ledger version through a consensus protocol, and a new ledger closes every three to five seconds according to xrpl.org.

The old version of this page said banks use “Ripple.net”. That mixed up the company’s payment network with the coin. Financial institutions that use Ripple’s products do not necessarily use XRP, so bank adoption of Ripple software tells you little about XRP as a casino currency.

How XRP deposits work

An XRP deposit is a payment on the XRP Ledger from your wallet to an address the casino gives you. Three details make XRP different from most coins.

The destination tag

Many casinos and exchanges receive XRP for all their customers at one shared address, and tell customers apart with a destination tag: a number attached to the payment. 7Bit says a destination tag is required on every XRP deposit and withdrawal. If the cashier shows a tag, you must enter it in your wallet’s “destination tag” or “memo” field. A payment without the right tag reaches the casino’s wallet but cannot be matched to your account automatically, and recovering it depends on the casino’s support team.

Addresses

Classic XRP Ledger addresses start with the letter r. Some services also use X-addresses, which pack the address and tag into one string beginning with X. If your wallet does not understand X-addresses, ask the casino for the classic address and tag separately.

Fees and the reserve

The minimum transaction cost on the XRP Ledger is 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP (1 XRP = 1,000,000 drops), and that small fee is destroyed rather than paid to anyone. It rises only when the network is under heavy load. In practice the network fee is negligible, and the exchange’s withdrawal fee is the cost that matters.

Each XRP Ledger account must hold a reserve: currently a base reserve of 1 XRP, plus 0.2 XRP for each object the account owns, such as a trust line. A brand-new personal wallet is only activated when it receives at least the base reserve, and that 1 XRP cannot be spent while the account exists. Casino deposit addresses are already active, so this matters mostly when you set up your own wallet to receive withdrawals.

Speed

With ledgers closing every few seconds, an XRP payment is final almost at once. The waiting time at a casino comes from its own processing, not from the network. 7Bit says XRP transactions typically complete in three to five seconds but that it also runs its own checks on each payment.

Step by step: from exchange to casino with XRP

1. Set up a wallet. Options include Xaman (formerly Xumm), Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets, and multi-coin apps such as Trust Wallet and Exodus. Our crypto wallets guide compares the types. Fund it with at least 1 XRP so the account is active.
2. Buy XRP. XRP trades on most large exchanges, including Binance, Kraken and Coinbase, subject to your country. Compare trading and withdrawal fees.
3. Choose a casino and check its terms. Confirm XRP is in the cashier, check the restricted-country list and note the minimum deposit and bonus rules.
4. Copy the address and the tag. In the cashier choose XRP, then copy both the r-address and the destination tag. Check the first and last characters of the address after pasting.
5. Send a small test payment. Wait for it to show in your casino balance, then send the rest.
6. Withdraw with your own address. When cashing out to a personal wallet, you normally leave the tag blank. If you withdraw straight to an exchange, enter the exchange’s destination tag, or the funds will not be credited to you.

Withdrawing to your own wallet rather than an exchange has one more advantage with XRP: you avoid the risk of forgetting the exchange’s destination tag. If you do send to an exchange without a tag, contact its support with the transaction hash straight away.

A worked example shows why the reserve matters. Suppose you create a new wallet and your first casino withdrawal is 50 XRP. The ledger activates the account, 1 XRP becomes the base reserve and 49 XRP is free to spend. Had the withdrawal been smaller than 1 XRP, the payment would fail, because it cannot fund the new account. Most casinos set XRP withdrawal minimums well above that level, but it is one more reason to set up and fund your wallet before you need it.

Bonus maths in XRP

Welcome bonuses at these casinos are mostly priced in BTC or euros, and an XRP deposit is matched at its value on the day. Wagering decides how much of the headline figure is realistic.

The SEC case: what was decided

The old page claimed the SEC had ruled that “XRP is a security”, which was never the outcome. In December 2020 the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Ripple. On 13 July 2023, Judge Analisa Torres of the Southern District of New York held that Ripple’s direct sales of XRP to institutional buyers were unregistered sales of investment contracts, but that its programmatic sales on exchanges and other distributions were not. The ruling did not find that XRP itself, as a token, is a security.

A final judgment on 7 August 2024 ordered Ripple to pay a civil penalty of $125,035,150 and barred further violations in institutional sales. Both sides appealed, and in August 2025 the SEC and Ripple dismissed their appeals, leaving the 2023 rulings and the 2024 judgment in place. For a casino player, the case has no direct effect on depositing or withdrawing XRP.

Is XRP centralised?

This is a fair question, and the answer has two parts. Anyone can run an XRP Ledger validator, but most servers follow a recommended list of trusted validators, and Ripple publishes one of the commonly used lists. Ripple, the company, also holds a large share of the supply. Both points lead critics to call XRP more centralised than Bitcoin. For casino use the practical effects are small: payments settle fast and cheaply, and no single party can reverse a confirmed payment.

Fixing a missing XRP deposit

1. Find the payment on an XRP Ledger explorer such as XRPScan or Bithomp using the transaction hash from your wallet.
2. Check the result field. “tesSUCCESS” means the ledger accepted the payment; anything else means it failed and the XRP did not leave your account, apart from the small fee.

XRP holders are a favourite target for scams, from fake giveaways promising to “double” your coins to support impostors on social media.
