Lightning Roulette: How It Works, Odds and RTP
Lightning Roulette is Evolution's live single-zero roulette with random 50x to 500x lucky-number multipliers. Here is how it works, its payouts and RTP.

Lightning Roulette is a live dealer roulette game from Evolution that adds random 50x to 500x multipliers to a single-zero European wheel. Each round, one to five numbers are struck by lightning, and a straight-up bet on a lucky number pays that multiplier instead of the reduced 29:1 straight payout. This guide covers the rules, the odds and the RTP, with a worked crypto example. If you want the plain single-zero game first, see our roulette hub.
What is Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette is a live casino game from Evolution, the supplier behind many of the live dealer tables you see at online casinos. It was named Game of the Year at the EGR Awards in 2018 and plays on a standard European wheel with 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero.
A live presenter runs the round and pulls a lever to trigger the lucky numbers, while the ball spins automatically on a physical wheel. The black and gold Art Deco studio gives the game its distinctive look. Evolution also makes a faster XXXtreme Lightning Roulette variant, which adds Chain Lightning with up to ten lucky spots and Double Strike multipliers that can reach 2,000x.
How a round works
A round follows the same flow as ordinary roulette, with one extra step:
- You place bets on the table as usual, covering single numbers, groups, colours or dozens.
- Betting closes and the presenter pulls the lever. Between one and five lucky numbers are picked at random and struck by lightning on screen.
- Each lucky number is given a random multiplier of 50x, 100x, 200x, 300x, 400x or 500x.
- The wheel spins and the ball lands. A straight-up bet on a lucky number pays its multiplier, a straight-up bet on a normal number pays 29:1, and all other bets pay standard roulette odds.
Lucky numbers and multipliers
The lightning feature is the whole point of the game, and it applies only to straight-up bets, meaning a bet on a single number. If you back a number with a split, street, corner or outside bet, that bet pays the normal odds even when the number is struck.
The possible multipliers are fixed:
- 50x
- 100x
- 200x
- 300x
- 400x
- 500x
Lower multipliers turn up far more often than higher ones, but the exact draw probabilities are not shown on Evolution’s public game page.
Odds, payouts and RTP
The key trade-off is the straight-up payout. Standard European roulette pays 35:1 on a single number. Lightning Roulette cuts that to 29:1 for any straight bet that is not struck by lightning, then hands the difference back through the lucky multipliers. This is why it pays to read our roulette house edge guide before you bet.
Operator pages for the game publish these figures:
- Straight-up bets: 97.10% RTP, a house edge of about 2.90%
- Split, street, corner, line and outside bets: 97.30% RTP, a house edge of 2.70%
The 2.70% figure is the standard edge of single-zero roulette, one divided by 37. The straight bet gives up part of that to fund the lightning multipliers, so its edge runs a little higher. One operator notes that the RTP can differ from one jurisdiction to another, so check the game’s own rules where you play.
Lightning Roulette vs standard roulette
| Feature | Lightning Roulette | European roulette | American roulette |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel | 37 pockets, single zero | 37 pockets, single zero | 38 pockets, single and double zero |
| Straight-up payout | 29:1, plus multipliers | 35:1 | 35:1 |
| Lucky multipliers | 1 to 5 numbers, 50x to 500x | None | None |
| House edge, straight bet | 2.90% | 2.70% | 5.26% |
The single zero is why European roulette and Lightning Roulette offer better value than the American layout, whose extra double-zero pocket raises the house edge to 5.26%. For a fuller look at the classic game, see our European roulette guide.
Worked example with crypto
Here is how the numbers play out in round crypto amounts, for illustration only.
Say you stake 0.001 BTC on a single number in Lightning Roulette. If it lands as a normal number, the 29:1 payout returns 0.030 BTC (your 0.001 BTC stake plus 0.029 BTC profit). If the same number is struck at 100x, the return is 0.100 BTC. At the top 500x multiplier, it would be 0.500 BTC.
Over the long run the house edge decides the result. A 2.90% edge on straight bets means that, on average, each 0.001 BTC staked returns about 0.000029 BTC less than the true value of the bet. No betting system or progression changes that edge. Many Bitcoin casinos carry this game, and the odds stay the same whatever coin you use.
Licensing and how to check the game is genuine
Evolution Malta Holdings Limited, the company behind Lightning Roulette, holds a Malta Gaming Authority business-to-business licence numbered MGA/B2B/187/2010 and is licensed in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission. The licence number is shown on Evolution’s own site, and you can read about the regulator on our Malta Gaming Authority page.
When you sit at a table, look for the Evolution branding in the live lobby to confirm you are on the real product. Lucky numbers are picked by a random number generator inside Evolution’s game, not by the casino’s software. Live dealer games are not provably fair in the blockchain sense, they rely on the supplier’s licence and audits instead. For how that differs, see our provably fair guide.
As of October 2026, Evolution still lists Lightning Roulette among its live roulette games, alongside XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, Immersive Roulette and Auto Roulette. This page is for players outside the US and UK, and availability depends on your country’s laws. If you are in the United States, see our US crypto casino guide instead.
Responsible gambling
Roulette is a game of chance, and the house edge means most players lose over time. Set a limit before you play, bet only money you can afford to lose, and stop when it stops being fun. If you need support, talk to someone at gamblersanonymous.org or gamblingtherapy.org.
FAQ
What is Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette is a live dealer roulette game from Evolution. It plays on a single-zero European wheel, and each round one to five numbers are struck by lightning and given a 50x to 500x multiplier that pays only on straight-up bets.
How is Lightning Roulette different from normal roulette?
The main difference is the straight-up payout. Standard European roulette pays 35:1 on a single number, while Lightning Roulette pays 29:1. In exchange, one to five lucky numbers each round carry a 50x to 500x multiplier. All other bets pay the same as standard roulette.
What does a straight-up bet pay in Lightning Roulette?
A straight-up bet on a number that is not struck pays 29:1. If the number is a lucky number, it pays the assigned multiplier, which can be 50x, 100x, 200x, 300x, 400x or 500x.
What is the RTP and house edge of Lightning Roulette?
Straight-up bets return 97.10%, a house edge of about 2.90%. Split, street, corner, line and outside bets return 97.30%, a house edge of 2.70%. The exact RTP can vary by jurisdiction.
Can I play Lightning Roulette with cryptocurrency?
Yes. Many crypto casinos carry Evolution’s Lightning Roulette, so you can deposit and bet in Bitcoin or other coins. Availability depends on the operator and your location, and the odds do not change based on the currency you use.
Is Lightning Roulette fair?
The game is run by Evolution, a licensed supplier, and the lucky numbers are generated by an RNG inside Evolution’s game. Evolution Malta Holdings Limited holds the Malta Gaming Authority B2B licence MGA/B2B/187/2010. As with all roulette, the house edge means you should expect to lose over time.
